New Brew: Darling Strange Poo (Brown Ale)

Yes, I went there. I just sent a text to my roommates asking for beer name suggestions as we never made one when we brewed last night. But just as I hit send, inspiration and indigestion hit me, and this gem of a name was born. Sorry Rick and Geordie (and anybody with good taste), I will be ignoring your responses.

Brewing
Date
: 10/21/09 (almost a month since the last brewing, what was I thinking?!)
Name of beer: Darling Strange Poo
Type of beer: Brown Ale
Quantity: 5 gallons
Homage Beer: We were drinking a variety pack of Flying Dog while brewing, and ended the night by opening the first bottle of Double Bag of Tricks Pumpkin Ale. And Boy! What a shocker! In the bottling section of my last post, I mentioned how it tasted really weird. And Bad. Well, friends, yesterday it tasted great! I'm gonna make a more detailed tasting post, probably next week.

Ingredients:
3.3 lbs pre-hopped light malt liquid extract
1 lb light dry malt extract
1 lb amber dry malt extract
1 lb brown sugar
6 oz chocolate barley
8 oz dark crystal barley
2 oz roasted barley
1 oz Fuggle hops
Dry yeast

Process: Same as usual. Nothing crazy here.

Original Gravity: 1.032
Yeast Temperature: Not measured. Actually not even approximated. We're running open loop controls! ....and that's the last control systems joke I ever make on this blog.
Preliminary Taste: Like sweet, syrupy, iced tea...minus the ice. I know I always say it tastes like iced tea during the preliminary taste, but there was not even a HINT of hops on this one. Ok, maybe a slight hint, but significantly less than usual.

Anyway, this one won't be ready by Halloween, obviously, but now that we've tasted the other 2 beers (DBoT and BV), and they both turned out great (but not as expected, more to come on that), we're ready for Halloween festivities. This beer will be ready around mid November (it doesn't need as much time as beers with lots of hops and alcohol), so it will just have to raise our spirits leading into the winter.

I think we'll need a Porter to carry us the rest of the way. Maybe a stout to follow. Maybe not in that order. I'll keep you posted.
